The main three things you want to be sure to have in common before collaborating
The Venn-Diagram tattoo on my forearm represents everything I preach in my collaboration business - finding the overlap between you and the person/brand/community you want to partner with. The main three things you want to be sure to have in common before collaborating are:
1. Mission - What are you both trying to accomplish in your business? It helps to have similar big picture goals, otherwise a partnership will feel off to your communities.
2. Vibe - You want to speak the same language, use similar vocabulary and phrases, and have the same tone. If you drop F bombs left and right but they would never dream of it, that might not be the right fit.
3. Audience - If you don’t share a similar target demo, then what are you doing trying to talk to their community? That’s like a straight woman hitting up gay bars to find a boyfriend - fun, but not a strategic way to achieve your goals.
As we approach Thanksgiving where many of us will find ourselves in dining rooms across the country with family members who might not share our opinions on ALL OF THE THINGS, look for that middle piece on the Venn-Diagram, even if it’s just that you both share a grandma or you both fucking love Aunt Shirley’s mac n cheese.
